Leaders’ Training Intro

The greatest challenge every organisation faces is the continual need for more leaders. Any organisation that doesn’t have a multiplying leadership culture has no future.

But our ambition runs higher than merely ensuring the survival of the churches we already have. We want to see the lights turned back on in Cornwall. This means working to establish gospel-centred, Spirit-filled, disciple-making communities in every community across the county. To do that we’re going to need more leaders at every level of the local church. Lots more.

That is why leadership development is a priority. The Leadership Training Track is a 12-month programme to help Grace Church Truro, Blaze Church Newquay, the King’s Arms Church Camborne and the Falmouth church plant to invest in the lives of our up-and-coming leaders in our churches.

Full details can be found here.

The training track consists of three modules:

Module 1: Leading yourself (Spring Term 2017)

Module 2: Deepening theological understanding (Summer Term 2017)

Module 3: Leading others (Autumn Term 2017)

Module 1: Leading Yourself

Good leaders understand that our top priority must be learning how to lead ourselves. God looks at our hearts before he looks at our gifts and talents, so developing Christ-like character must be our primary goal. Spiritual leadership thrusts us into the heart of the battle against sin, the flesh and the devil, so we must ensure we are equipped through cultivating a close, fully surrendered walk with God. We are immersed in a culture that continually tempts us away from living God’s way, so we must be intentional about growing in discipline and self-control.

Module 2: Deepening Theological Understanding

A spiritual leader must be competent at handling Scripture. As Paul says to Timothy, the Word of God “is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). Leadership that doesn’t bring God’s Word to bear on people’s lives merely dispenses human wisdom; it’s the Word of God that is “living and active” and able to transform lives (Hebrews 4:12). This module is about digging deeper into the great themes of Scripture, helping us understand what the Bible story is all about, and enabling us to become more effective at holding out the Truth and refuting error.

Module 3: Leading Others

God’s work in our lives isn’t merely for our benefit. A spiritual leader understands the importance of passing on to others what we have learned. This final module looks to the future: who is God asking you to serve, and how?

At the end of each module there is a written assignment. This is an opportunity for you to reflect on what you’ve been learning over the course of the term.

It is strongly recommended that you prepare for the assignment as you begin to engage with the study materials for each module. You may like to keep a notebook with your immediate reflections on reading/listening, or even begin work on the final assignment as you go.

The written assignments will not be graded. We’re not looking for an academic piece of writing. The purpose is not to produce an essay, but an honest piece of writing in which you reflect on your growth as a leader. There is no minimum or maximum length, but remember, sometimes less is more!

If you’re doing this training track with your spouse, what we’re looking for is an assignment from each individual, not one from each couple.

Please email your assignment to andrew.sampson@gracetruro.org and make the subject of the email “cohort assignment”.

Assignment deadlines:

Module 1: 1st April 2017

Module 2: 31st July 2017

Module 3: 10th December 2017
